Job Summary

We are seeking a strategic and results-driven Head of Production & Commodity Sourcing to lead upstream agricultural operations and supply chain development. The successful candidate will oversee crop production, commodity sourcing, and supplier networks to ensure a consistent, cost-effective, and high-quality supply of raw materials. The role will also champion environmental sustainability initiatives, including climate-smart agriculture and land development programs.

Key Responsibilities

1. Crop Production Strategy (Maize & Soybean)

  • Develop and execute large-scale crop production plans
  • Oversee land development, planting schedules, harvesting, and post-harvest activities
  • Drive yield optimization through improved agronomic practices, seed selection, and mechanization
  • Align crop production with internal feedmill and processing requirements

2. Commodity Sourcing & Supply Chain Management

  • Develop sourcing strategies for maize, soybean, and feed additives
  • Build and manage supplier networks including farmers, aggregators, and traders
  • Implement contract farming and structured offtake agreements
  • Ensure supply reliability, quality consistency, and cost efficiency

3. Supplier & Farmer Relationship Management

  • Lead engagement with smallholder and commercial farmers
  • Develop and manage outgrower schemes
  • Provide technical support on agronomic practices and yield improvement
  • Establish fair and transparent pricing systems and long-term partnerships

4. Feedmill & Processing Input Alignment

  • Collaborate with feedmill and processing teams to ensure timely supply of raw materials
  • Maintain quality standards for feed production and soybean processing
  • Ensure alignment between supply and production demand cycles

5. Quality Control & Post-Harvest Management

  • Establish systems for moisture control, grain grading, and storage
  • Minimize post-harvest losses through proper handling and infrastructure
  • Ensure compliance with feed safety and processing standards

6. Cost Optimization & Market Intelligence

  • Monitor local and regional commodity markets
  • Develop strategies to manage price volatility and optimize procurement timing
  • Track cost metrics and identify opportunities for efficiency and scale

7. Environmental Sustainability & Climate Strategy

  • Lead implementation of climate-smart agricultural practices
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and ESG standards
  • Promote soil conservation, water efficiency, and sustainable land use
  • Develop strategies to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint

8. Landscaping & Tree Planting Programs

  • Design and implement agroforestry and tree planting initiatives
  • Lead landscaping efforts including windbreaks and environmental buffers
  • Integrate sustainability initiatives into long-term land management strategies
  • Monitor and report on environmental impact

9. Risk Management

  • Identify and mitigate risks related to weather, crop failure, and supply disruptions
  • Develop contingency sourcing strategies
  • Ensure diversification of supply sources

10. Data Management & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records on production, supplier performance, and yields
  • Prepare reports on supply chain performance, cost trends, and sustainability outcomes
  • Utilize data to drive strategic planning and decision-making

11. Team Leadership

  • Build and lead teams across agronomy, procurement, and field operations
  • Train staff and farmer partners on best practices
  • Foster a culture of accountability, performance, and sustainability

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agribusiness, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5–10 years’ experience in crop production, commodity sourcing, or supply chain management
  • Experience working with both smallholder farmers and large-scale agricultural operations
  • Strong understanding of grain markets, input supply chains, and agricultural economics
