Position Title: Director of Operations
Position Summary
The Director of Operations serves as a senior leadership team member responsible for overseeing AfHEA’s operational functions and ensuring the effective implementation of the Association’s strategic objectives. Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Operations will provide strategic and operational leadership across finance, human resources, administration, membership engagement, and organisational development.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director and relevant governance structures to strengthen institutional effectiveness, support resource mobilisation efforts, and drive operational excellence to advance AfHEA’s mission and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Operations will have the following responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership and Organisational Development
- Develop and implement operational strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with AfHEA’s strategic priorities.
- Establish and monitor organisational performance goals that support sustainability, growth, and institutional effectiveness.
- Support the Executive Director in executing both short-term operational plans and long-term strategic initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve organisational efficiency and effectiveness.
Operations and Human Resource Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Association, ensuring efficient functioning across all departments.
- Provide leadership and supervision to staff responsible for administration, finance, human resources, communications, marketing, information technology, and other operational functions.
- Lead recruitment processes and foster a high-performance organisational culture through staff coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
Financial Management and Sustainability
- Lead the preparation of annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts in collaboration with the finance and programs teams.
- Monitor organisational expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets, donor requirements, and AfHEA policies and procedures.
- Support the development and implementation of organisational sustainability initiatives, including diversified revenue generation strategies.
Membership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Oversee membership engagement initiatives aimed at strengthening member participation, retention, and growth.
- Foster effective communication and collaboration among staff, members, partners, and stakeholders.
- Assist the Executive Director in managing strategic partnerships and donor relationships.
Resource Mobilisation and Reporting
- Support fundraising initiatives, proposal development, and resource mobilisation activities.
- Collaborate with finance and programs teams in the preparation and submission of high-quality donor and organisational reports.
- Monitor operational performance through the analysis of relevant data, metrics, and key performance indicators.
Governance Support
- Attend Board meetings as requested by the Executive Director.
- Present operational updates and provide information to support governance decision-making.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, Non-Profit Management, or another relevant field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in operations management, preferably within a non-governmental organisation, professional association, or similar setting.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, organisational development, and operational management.
- Proven experience in business development and resource mobilization.
- Proven experience in budget development, financial oversight, and resource management.
- Proven experience developing and implementing organisational sustainability strategies, including fundraising, consultancy services, and membership engagement initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in human resource management duties.
- Strong understanding of key organisational functions, including finance, human resources, administration, communications, and information technology.
- Experience working with development partners, donors, and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using business technologies and operational management systems.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organisational, and decision-making skills.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working in a health-related NGO.
- Previous experience working in an international or regional membership-based organisation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and French will be an added advantage.
