Job Purpose

The Physician Assistant (Medical) will provide comprehensive primary healthcare services under the supervision of the Medical Director, supporting the overall healthcare delivery system to ensure equitable access to quality patient care. The role involves clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, patient management, health education, and community outreach activities.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will:

  • Work as an integral member of the medical team to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Assess, monitor, and evaluate patient conditions and treatment outcomes.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Support clinical and community health interventions aimed at improving public health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The Physician Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Assessing and prioritizing patients presenting at the hospital, polyclinic, or health center based on their medical conditions and healthcare needs.
  • Conducting confidential patient consultations, including:
    • Comprehensive history taking
    • Clinical assessment
    • Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Developing, initiating, and implementing appropriate patient management and care plans.
  • Maintaining accurate, complete, and legible patient records and documentation.
  • Assisting in the provision of emergency medical interventions and treatments.
  • Supporting emergency surgical and invasive procedures where required.
  • Administering emergency therapies and medical interventions.
  • Assisting with minor surgical procedures, including:
    • Incision and drainage of boils
    • Suturing of wounds
    • Wound dressing and management
  • Participating actively in:
    • Ward rounds
    • Clinical review meetings
    • Morbidity and mortality conferences
    • Staff meetings and professional discussions
  • Providing primary healthcare services to patients with mental health conditions and facilitating appropriate referrals where necessary.
  • Undertaking relief duties at health centers and other designated healthcare facilities as required.

Community Health Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in community outreach and public health programmes within the facility’s catchment area.
  • Facilitate community participation in health promotion and disease prevention initiatives.
  • Support maternal and child healthcare programmes, family planning services, and community health education activities.
  • Assist in the collection, analysis, and reporting of epidemiological, morbidity, and mortality data.
  • Promote public awareness and preventive healthcare practices within communities.

Communication and Teamwork

The Physician Assistant will:

  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in the dissemination of health information and educational programmes within the facility.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings, conferences, and professional engagements.
  • Promote and safeguard the interests, dignity, and well-being of patients and visitors at all times.
  • Foster a collaborative and patient-centered healthcare environment.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in Physician Assistantship (Medical) from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of relevant post-qualification clinical experience.
  • A valid practicing license issued by the Medical and Dental Council (MDC).
  • Demonstrated competence in primary healthcare delivery and patient management.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical procedures, patient assessment, and treatment protocols.
