Job Description

A reputable private healthcare facility is seeking a qualified, dedicated, and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician to join its clinical services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing and supporting the efficient processing, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of laboratory investigations to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Job Purpose

The Medical Laboratory Technician will undertake laboratory investigations and provide technical support services in accordance with established laboratory protocols and professional standards. The role requires accuracy, efficiency, professionalism, and adherence to quality management and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing and Analysis

  • Perform laboratory tests and procedures in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct analytical procedures accurately and within specified turnaround times.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior laboratory personnel and support staff.
  • Perform diagnostic tests using both automated analyzers and manual laboratory techniques.
  • Carry out microbiological investigations, including identification of microorganisms and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Conduct assays using appropriate laboratory equipment and interpret results accurately.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate laboratory equipment safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration checks, and quality control procedures on laboratory equipment.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and promptly report issues to the Unit Supervisor.
  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment.

Laboratory Information Management

  • Utilize laboratory information management systems effectively to:
    • Enter laboratory requests and patient information.
    • Match and verify patient records.
    • Input and validate test results.
    • Generate laboratory reports and worksheets.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Perform quality control checks and document results appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality assurance standards and protocols.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory ethical standards, safety regulations, and professional guidelines.
  • Participate in internal quality improvement initiatives and audits.

Communication and Team Collaboration

  • Maintain effective working relationships with laboratory colleagues, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
  • Collaborate professionally with Laboratory Assistants, Attendants, and other support staff.
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to operational improvements.
  • Maintain records of professional development activities and performance evaluations.

Additional Duties

  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head of Facility or Laboratory Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess:

  • A Diploma or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of practical working experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Successful completion of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) Licensure Examination.
  • Valid registration and licensing with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of laboratory ethics, protocols, and best practices.
  • Proven experience in laboratory diagnostic procedures and patient sample analysis.
