Role Objective

Northern Ashanti Mines Limited is seeking an experienced and results-oriented Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Superintendent to lead and strengthen the organization’s safety, health, environmental, and compliance programs.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering a proactive safety culture and ensuring that all operations are conducted in a safe, healthy, environmentally responsible, and legally compliant manner for employees, contractors, visitors, and stakeholders.

This role requires a strategic and hands-on HSE professional with strong leadership, risk management, and operational compliance experience within a mining or heavy industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. HSE Leadership & Management Systems

  • Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the company’s HSE Management Systems to ensure operational effectiveness
  • Provide strategic guidance, technical expertise, and operational support to supervisors, employees, and contractors on HSE standards and safe work practices
  • Drive a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, behavioural safety programs, coaching, and employee engagement initiatives
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives aimed at achieving zero harm and operational excellence

2. Risk Management, Compliance & Assurance

  • Ensure preventive and corrective measures are implemented to minimize workplace incidents and environmental impacts
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities, government agencies, and external stakeholders on HSE compliance matters
  • Coordinate internal and external HSE audits, inspections, and compliance assessments
  • Ensure timely implementation, verification, and effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions arising from audits and investigations
  • Monitor compliance with mining, occupational health, environmental, and safety regulations

3. Environmental & Occupational Health Management

  • Oversee environmental management programs including:
    • Waste management
    • Pollution prevention
    • Emissions control
    • Water stewardship
    • Environmental monitoring
  • Ensure effective emergency preparedness and response systems through drills, simulations, and training exercises
  • Supervise occupational health and industrial hygiene programs to safeguard employee wellbeing and fitness for work
  • Promote environmentally sustainable operational practices across the organization

4. Incident Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses, occupational illnesses, and environmental events
  • Conduct detailed root cause analysis and ensure implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Analyze HSE performance trends, leading indicators, and incident data to identify improvement opportunities
  • Prepare and present HSE reports and recommendations to management and relevant stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance overall safety and environmental performance

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety Management, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Professional HSE certification such as NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent is highly desirable
  • Minimum of 8 years’ progressive HSE experience, with at least 4 years in a supervisory or management role
  • Must be MINCOM certified or eligible for certification up to Superintendent level
  • Additional certifications in:
    • Risk Management
    • Incident Investigation (e.g., ICAM)
    • Environmental Management
      will be an added advantage

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities in high-pressure operational environments
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex safety data effectively
  • Strong understanding of proactive risk management systems and HSE auditing processes
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and strengthen organizational safety culture
  • Proficiency in modern HSE reporting systems, analytics, and performance monitoring tools
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Strong planning, organizational, and project management abilities
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability
