Position Overview

The Accountant will be responsible for managing the organization’s day-to-day financial operations, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting budgeting and financial reporting processes, and ensuring compliance with internal financial policies as well as statutory and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate will play a key role in safeguarding organizational resources by ensuring sound financial management practices and providing timely financial information to support strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records and accounting systems.
  • Process financial transactions, including receipts, payments, journals, and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Assist in preparing organizational budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Monitor expenditure to ensure compliance with approved budgets.

Bookkeeping & Accounting

  • Maintain the general ledger and supporting schedules.
  • Record and reconcile all financial transactions accurately.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Ensure timely processing of invoices and payments.
  • Prepare payroll information where required.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare statutory financial reports and management reports.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal financial policies.
  • Support internal and external audit processes by preparing relevant documentation.
  • Maintain proper financial documentation and filing systems.

Budget Monitoring

  • Track project and operational expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Identify budget variances and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Support project managers with financial information and budget monitoring.

Internal Controls

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of effective internal control systems.
  • Ensure financial transactions comply with organizational policies and donor requirements.
  • Identify financial risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

Administrative Support

  • Assist in developing financial procedures and improving accounting processes.
  • Prepare financial data for management decision-making.
  • Perform other finance and administrative duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in:
    • Accounting
    • Finance
    • Or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant accounting experience.
  • Previous experience working with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or donor-funded projects will be considered an added advantage.

Required Skills & Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong understanding of bookkeeping principles and accounting standards.
  • Experience preparing financial reports, budgets, and reconciliations.
  • Sound knowledge of internal controls and financial compliance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information with integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
