Job Purpose
The Mechanical Superintendent will lead all mechanical engineering and maintenance activities on-site, ensuring optimal equipment performance, reliability, and safety. The role combines technical expertise, leadership, and strategic planning to maximize plant efficiency, minimize downtime, and support overall operational profitability.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Operational Excellence
- Ensure optimal availability, reliability, and performance of plant equipment
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures and implement corrective actions
- Oversee major repairs, shutdowns, and maintenance activities
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant uptime and extend equipment lifespan
- Collaborate with OEMs and vendors to resolve complex mechanical issues
Maintenance & Planning
- Develop and execute effective preventive and predictive maintenance strategies
- Work closely with planners to ensure timely execution of maintenance schedules
- Optimize spare parts inventory to balance availability and cost efficiency
- Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, drawings, and manuals
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Ensure QA/QC standards and engineering compliance across all mechanical works
- Identify and mitigate operational risks through sound engineering practices
- Promote environmentally responsible and safe work practices
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and mentor engineers, technicians, and contractors
- Drive performance using KPIs for equipment reliability and team productivity
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Mincom Competency Certificate (minimum Sectional Engineer level)
- Mechanical Trade Certification (mandatory)
- Membership with the Ghana Institution of Engineers (advantage)
- Valid Ghanaian Driver’s License (minimum Class B)
Experience
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in a gold processing plant
- At least 3 years in a managerial/supervisory role
- Experience in large-scale fixed asset and maintenance management
Technical Knowledge
- Strong expertise in heavy plant equipment including:
- SAG & ball mills, crushers, conveyors, pumps
- Thickeners, screens, agitators, elution circuits
- Blowers, oxygen plants, and related systems
- Knowledge of fabrication, welding, rigging, rubber lining, and machining
- Strong understanding of reliability engineering and maintenance optimization

- Proficiency in interpreting mechanical drawings

- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

- Must be medically fit for site-based operations
