Job Description

Job Purpose

The Mines Captain is responsible for supervising and coordinating mining operations to ensure safe, efficient, and productive extraction of mineral resources. The role oversees mining crews, enforces safety regulations, monitors operational performance, and ensures that production targets are achieved in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Supervision

  • Supervise daily underground or surface mining operations.
  • Coordinate mining crews including miners, drill operators, blasters, equipment operators, and support staff.
  • Ensure that mining activities are conducted according to approved mine plans.
  • Monitor production progress and ensure targets are met.
  • Provide instructions on work procedures and operational priorities.

2. Safety Management

  • Enforce strict compliance with mine safety regulations and company safety policies.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of working areas, equipment, and procedures.
  • Ensure workers use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead safety meetings and toolbox talks with mining crews.

3. Workforce Supervision and Leadership

  • Direct, motivate, and manage mining personnel to ensure high productivity and discipline.
  • Allocate tasks and work shifts among mining teams.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior supervisors and miners.
  • Monitor employee performance and recommend training where necessary.
  • Address workplace conflicts and maintain team morale.

4. Production Management

  • Ensure efficient extraction of minerals while minimizing waste.
  • Monitor drilling, blasting, hauling, and ore handling operations.
  • Track production outputs and report variances from planned targets.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and implement corrective measures.
  • Ensure optimal utilization of mining equipment.

5. Compliance and Regulatory Adherence

  • Ensure mining operations comply with government mining laws and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain proper documentation for operational activities.
  • Assist in regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Implement company policies related to health, safety, and environmental protection.

6. Equipment and Resource Management

  • Monitor the condition and performance of mining equipment.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs and servicing.
  • Ensure proper usage and handling of explosives and other mining materials.
  • Manage resource allocation to ensure uninterrupted operations.

7. Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
  • Maintain records of production, workforce attendance, equipment usage, and safety incidents.
  • Report operational challenges and recommend improvements to mine management.

8. Planning and Coordination

  • Assist mine engineers in implementing mine development plans.
  • Coordinate activities with geology, engineering, and maintenance departments.
  • Support mine planning activities including drilling and blasting schedules.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Mineral Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in mining operations.
  • At least 3 years in a supervisory role within a mining environment.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Mine Supervisor Certificate
  • Blasting License (where required)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certification
