Position Summary

The Safety Officer will be responsible for implementing and monitoring workplace health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies across active road construction sites. The role involves conducting regular inspections, identifying potential hazards, enforcing safety procedures, investigating incidents, and ensuring that all employees, contractors, and visitors adhere to established safety standards.

Working closely with project managers, engineers, supervisors, and contractors, the successful candidate will help foster a culture of safety while ensuring compliance with company policies and relevant statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting routine site inspections to identify workplace hazards and unsafe practices.
  • Implementing and monitoring occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with road construction safety regulations and company HSE standards.
  • Carrying out comprehensive risk assessments and recommending appropriate control measures.
  • Monitoring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all site personnel.
  • Investigating workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, and preparing detailed reports with corrective actions.
  • Coordinating emergency preparedness activities, including emergency response planning and evacuation procedures.
  • Delivering safety inductions, toolbox talks, and safety awareness training for employees and contractors.
  • Monitoring contractor compliance with health and safety requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate HSE records, inspection reports, incident logs, and compliance documentation.
  • Advising project management on safety improvements and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Promoting a positive safety culture through continuous education, engagement, and leadership.
  • Ensuring that all work activities are carried out safely without compromising productivity or quality.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should possess:

  • A recognized qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience working as a Safety Officer within the road construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure sector.
  • Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Practical experience conducting site inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments.
  • Experience in emergency response planning and incident management.
  • Ability to prepare safety reports and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary construction teams.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
